Breast Reduction, also known as Reduction Mammaplasty, is a procedure to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size more in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with excessively large breasts (macromastia).
Women with large breasts may experience more than dissatisfaction with body image, they can also feel physical pain and experience a host of complications that can impair a woman’s ability to lead an active life.
Benefits of breast reduction include:
- Removal of excess breast tissue and skin to achieve a breast size more in proportion with a woman’s body
- Relief from back and neck pain
- Improvement in posture
- Relief from skin rashes
- Relief from some breathing problems
- Improvement in skeletal deformities
Breast reduction surgery is normally performed under general anesthesia and requires an overnight hospital stay. Swelling, bruising and some downtime is to be expected. Most patients experience minimal discomfort, but should plan to take it easy and avoid any heavy lifting for a number of weeks.
